Top 5 Most Underrated Games

Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Are you looking for a unique, wonderful game, but have already played all of the major AAA titles? Have no fear, because this list is for you!

5. Mirror’s Edge

Publisher: EA
Developer: DICE

Mirror’s Edge is about a runner named Faith who is desperately trying to save her sister from an evil government corporation. What’s unique about this title is that it’s a first-person platformer with parkour elements. The game is graphically stunning, with clean lines, sparse use of color, and edgy comic-inspired cut scenes. After you finish the game, you’re encouraged to go back through the levels and try to achieve a higher score, find all of the messenger bags, etc.

4. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

enslaved

Publisher: Namco Bandai
Developer: Ninja Theory

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a platformer/puzzler, where you control Monkey (motion-captured by Andy Serkis) after he escapes from a holding cell. He soon meets Trip (played by Lindsey Shaw), who enslaves him and has him escort her back to her home, where he’s introduced  to some very unusual characters. This overlooked gem of a game has a fantastic story, great visuals, superb acting, and tight controls. Trip is also one of the best female gaming protagonists in gaming so far.

3. Metro 2033

Publisher: THQ (R.I.P)
Developer: 4A Games

Metro 2033 is based off of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel of the same name. The story centers on Artyom, a ranger who must save what’s left of Russia from the Dark Ones. Metro doesn’t hold your hand, and it’s not for casual gamers. Ammo is scarce, you must have Artyom wear and replace his gas mask and air filters, and health kits are hard to come by. The controls are a little cumbersome, but almost seem to add to the harsh story and atmosphere. This is one of the best FPSs I’ve ever played, and it’s a tense, scary thrill ride for anyone brave enough to play this diamond in the rough.

2. Vanquish

Publisher: Sega
Developer: Platinum Games

Vanquish is a roller coaster of a game. Often compared to Gears of War, this is a fast, fluid, over-the-top third person shooter. Your character is a DARPA agent who must bring down the glut of evil alien robots and mechs that have invaded the country. Vanquish has one of the best cover systems in gaming, and the boss fights are truly epic. This is a challenging, zany thrill ride.

1. Deadly Premonition

Publisher: Rising Star Games
Developer: Access Games

Deadly Premonition is one of the kookiest games of last gen. It looks like a PS2 game and the controls harken back to the days of old-school Silent Hill and Resident Evil, but I loved every flaw in this title. You play as Francis York Morgan, a detective with an imaginary friend who’s called to the town of Greenvale to solve the case of the Red Seed murders. He’s continually hounded by the Raincoat Killer, and slowly uncovers his murky past as several horrific crimes unfold. The story is the best aspect of this title. You’ll laugh, cringe, shudder, and maybe even cry. If you’re looking for a true survival-horror title, Deadly Premonition might be right up your alley.

  1. Very solid picks! I’d recommend The Director’s Cut version of Deadly Premonition for the PS3, as it has a ton of content not found in the original 360 version, improved controls and a few other neat things.
