Distress is a new game from Javy Gwaltney, one of the creators of the Twine games The Right Side of Town, The Terror Aboard the Speedwell and You Were Made for Loneliness. He’s back in a new medium with a new team, and this game looks wonderful so far. The new team is collectively called Light Machine, and the other two members are Ian Laser Higginbotham (artist) and Erandi Huipe (musician – he also worked on The Right Side of Town). Distress sounds like it’s going to be amazing for fans of sci-fi and horror:
“A fading distress signal from a space station that’s gone silent. A metropolis filled with dark secrets, death lurking in every alleyway. Welcome to Nova 8. Step into the boots of Demetria Barton, one of the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunters, and lead her team to a mysterious city in search of answers and riches. Distress is a branching visual novel inspired by the likes of Silent Hill, Snatcher, and Mass Effect. Trapped in a city filled with deadly creatures and a ruthless militarized task force controlled by a shadowy administrator, you’ll have to use your wits and make tough decisions in order to survive. You’re responsible not just for your own life, but the lives of your crew as well. Make your choices. Live with the consequences. Good luck.”
The game will feature a three-hour playtime with branching paths and a whopping thirty endings. The main character, Demetria, is a woman of color, which is awesome (that’s her in the picture above). The other characters
Distress has a ten-minute prologue, Excavation, available here that was created in Tyranobuilder; the full game will be made in Ren’Py. The full game is estimated to be finished next June, and rewards include the game, the soundtrack, developer podcasts, a digital artbook, a personalized short story, a monster designed by you, and your own likeness in the game.
Back the Kickstarter here, and while you wait, go play some of the Twine games!
