Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms (Pre-Alpha) Play w/ Allahweh :)

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms is a rogue-like game under development by Games Farm and currently available via Steam Early Access for $29.99. The game is in a pre-alpha stage right now, and is quite buggy and short. Overall, the game reminds me of Diablo III and other titles along those lines, yet given the unfinished and unpolished nature of the title, it would be hard for me to recommend paying the asking price for early access. Perhaps the game will be better once it’s cleaned up.

As it stands now, there are some interesting concepts here. I like how you play as a demon that can absorb the souls of the dead to give yourself new abilities or outright take their form (to fight in, to deceive people, etc.). In fact, this soul system effectively gives you a team of characters with their own health pools and stats, as well as skills, which is  pretty cool. If the game gets cleaned up in coming months, I think something good may be here.

Meanwhile, you can check out the first 30 minutes or so of gameplay and judge the game for yourself!

  1. Wow. I had to do a double take when I saw this because it’s actually the follow-up to an older RPG/adventure game from 2005 called KULT: Heretic Kingdoms or Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition.

Does that early access price get you the full game when it’s all done? The first game was pretty unique in that it required a lot of thought to play through and wasn’t a straight hack & slash game. It had a few bugs, but was pretty good and I liked that the game changed based on how you dealt with people. I got two of the six endings, but I should reinstall this one day and give it a go, as it was quite the sleeper.

I’m not sure how i feel about paying for an unpolished demo, but this seems to be the “thing” some games are doing to make some money for the developers while also allowing more loyal players to dive in early and give feedback to help make a better product (hopefully!)…

    • I agree with you on the Early Access thing, especially when someone has the guts to ask for $29.99. I personally think that you should offer a more “reasonable” price given the status of the game (that increases as the Alpha/Beta continues towards the polished game), and part of the payment will be the bug testing the end-user offers. But I digress =P

Yes, the asking price gets you the full game when it comes out, so that’s something. And the gameplay is pretty interesting, though the game is pretty darn buggy right now (even unstable, in places, with huge performance hits despite having a R9 290 and an 8-core CPU), but that’s probably to be expected.

That’s cool that the game is part of a larger universe. I never played the older game, but now I will have to look it up =)
