Kickstarter: Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark – Playing Cards and Tarot

Yes, I know, another Cthulhu Kickstarter! But this one is amazingly awesome for waaay different reasons. Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark – Playing Cards and Tarot is a project created by Shane Tyree. Shane was originally with the company Albino Dragon, and did the amazing art for their projects, including The Name of the Wind Cards Kickstarter (which is so super cool, and I totally backed it). His art is absolutely beautiful, as you can see in the picture below, and he’s an amazingly nice person. I met him at Gen Con and chatted with him for a bit, and he’s the bee’s knees.

“Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark consists of three distinct offerings, each designed to bring fans of the ‘Weird’ together to combine imaginations and ideas and to create something truly unique.

The Writhing Dark: The Eldrich Tarot: The first of the three part project is a Tarot Deck, based off of the commonly used and recognizable Rider-Waite model. The Tarot Deck will feature 78 unique illustrations, including all four suits (Swords, Wands, Cups, Pentacles) as well as the Major Arcana.

Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark from Bicycle: The second piece of the project is a Bicycle-branded deck of traditional playing cards. These cards will feature some of the art from the Tarot deck, as well as some unique art for Aces and Court cards, taking into consideration feedback from the community.

The Writhing Dark: The last piece of this project is what makes it truly unique. In honor of NaNoWriMo, we will be creating The Writhing Dark Anthology. This anthology of short stories will be comprised entirely of submissions from our backer community. Our editor will assist with pairing down selections and offering basic assistance, but in essence, this will be your story. Your tribute to the weird, the horrific, and the unknown. Your 4-5,000 word contributions will be included if they are suitable (reasonably legible, make sense, and follow a horror/weird fiction theme) in an E-book. As the project progresses, we will unlock illustrations, celebrity contributors, and other awesome upgrades to make The Writhing Dark as beautiful as it will be horrific. You must be a backer to contribute. The final product will be printed, bound, and interred in the Lovecraft collection. A lasting tribute to his legacy.”

Pretty cool, right? Well, it gets even cooler. Most Kickstarters have stretch goals and rewards, but for this one, Shane takes it a step further. If backers participate in an Alternate Reality Game, they can unlock even more rewards. These investigation rewards have already unlocked full-color sticker rewards for all the backers.

Here are some examples of the rewards:

  • $12 – Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark Playing card deck. A PDF copy of The Writhing Dark Anthology. You will also have your name in the anthology as a Novitiate in the Esoteric Order of Dagon.
  • $35 – The Writhing Dark: Eldritch Tarot deck. A PDF copy of The Writhing Dark Anthology. You will have your name in the anthology as an Initiate in the Esoteric Order of Dagon. You will also receive any of the Freebie stretch rewards we unlock during the project.
  • $47 – Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark Playing card deck. 1 – The Writhing Dark: Eldritch Tarot deck. A PDF copy of The Writhing Dark Anthology. You will have your name in the anthology as a Member in the Esoteric Order of Dagon. You will also receive any of the Freebie stretch rewards we unlock during the project.

Pretty cool stuff. There are even more awesome things Shane does with the project, so go check it out! The project is already fully funded, and ends Tuesday Dec 10, 12:01am EST.
