I had the opportunity to play the Dead Space 3 demo, and thought I’d share my thoughts as well as my Let’s Play so you can watch me scream and give things nicknames.
Isaac Clarke returns, joined by merciless soldier John Carver, to chase a risky plan that promises to finally stop the Necromorphs. Together, Clarke and Carver must explore the frozen planet of Tau Volantis and track down the secret they hope will end the Necromorph plague forever, all while overcoming avalanches, treacherous ice-climbs, and the violent wilderness. Facing deadly, evolved enemies and brutal elements, the unlikely pair must work together to save mankind from the impending apocalypse.
The demo had plenty of jump scares for me, but in comparison with the other two games I felt that the level of horror was significantly lower. I wasn’t really scared to play, and the atmosphere wasn’t as creepy as the atmosphere in the other two. I know this is just the demo, but I would think they’d want to reassure people that this was still a scary game. It also doesn’t appear to take place in space at all.
They did have one immensely creepy moment, when someone loses their head, so to say. But that was it really.
The controls were simple enough, but make sure you have a bigger TV, or you won’t be able to read any of the prompts in the beginning of the game. I just had to have my partner read the prompts to me, since it was impossible to see them on my screen. But once I learned what they were, they felt fluid enough.
I did enjoy the way co-op is blended as part of the game, instead of being something added on the side of the main campaign.
What do you think?
Are you grabbing Dead Space 3? Did the demo affect your decision?
