Tomb Raider #3 is an intense ride from start to finish. Lara and the surviving members of her crew are being hunted for an artifact that Lara can’t even remember taking, and the folks hunting them aren’t playing nice.
The issue starts off with some back story on Roth and Reyes, which I absolutely loved because I enjoyed the two of them in the game. I got the sense that they were romantically involved, and I adore unexpected romance. Speaking of couples, I’m also (now even more solidly than when I played the game) shipping Lara and Sam.
The art in this series isn’t really speaking to me, but I do enjoy the diversity of the characters. The writing has captured the voice of reboot Lara perfectly, and I’m interested in reading issue #4.
[SPOILER DISCUSSION]
I will say my one complaint: Lara is supposedly helpless because she doesn’t have a gun…but then she gets a gun and STILL gets jumped three more times. When is she going to stop being so helpless? And is everyone going to survive? The game was emotionally gripping in part because so many people died…is everyone who survived untouchable now? I hope not.
[END SPOILER]
