Free! Iwatobi Swim Club is the best anime. Ever.

It has everything that I fully approve of: hot guys running around in swimwear, stripping down at a moment’s notice, and engaging in semi-homoerotic interactions.

This scene alone launched 1,000 fanfics.

The story about how this anime was created is both amazing and awesome! Earlier this year, Kyoto Animation released a promo commercial showing off their studios’ work. The promo featured four guys — shirtless, bent over, swimming around, and being sexy. At the time, there were no intentions for the promo to be developed into an anime.

All it took was 30 seconds, and the promo took off like wildfire! Pairings, fanfics, drawings, and Tumblr pages featured the promo all over the internet. They dubbed it The Swimming Anime. A huge fandom was created — all for an anime that didn’t exist.

After the massive snail trail  following that the commercial generated, 12 episodes were ordered, and Free! Iwatobi Swim Club was born!

So what’s the anime about? Well, the first two minutes pretty much sum it up.

Pretty much.

Officially, it’s a standard sport anime. A bunch of boys want to start a swim club and stuff happens. It’s pretty cliché, as far as the story goes.

Unofficially, this anime is fan service. Delicious, amazing, brilliant fan service.  It’s an entire anime dedicated to washboard abs, toned backs, and men taking off their clothes at a moment’s notice.

There’s never been an anime dedicated to so much female fan service since Gravitation. That anime basically brought the Shounen-Ai/Yaoi genre to the states.

We all remember when Gravitation came to the states. This series left no survivors. 

Also, this anime comes with the best female character ever. Her name is Kou (or Gou). She’s basically the Japanese version of Tina from Bob’s Burgers. She “manages” the swim club and ogles all the male characters.

Yes, Gou, yes they are.

I think we’ve all learned an incredibly valuable lesson: never underestimate the power of the female sex drive!
