Kickstarter: Mighty No. 9

If you haven’t heard of Mighty No. 9 yet, then you are sadly missing out. This project has been all over the internet! Keiji Inafune should be really proud of this massive accomplishment. He’s really in touch with his fans, and this project certainly shows that. This is definitely not a project to miss out on.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding Mighty No. 9, and it’s well deserving of it. Keiji Inafune and his personal company Comcept have been working with a team of developers, most, if not all, of whom have previously worked with him on Mega Man in the past, to bring us Mighty No. 9. Mighty No. 9 is a new side-scrolling action game that hearkens back to the 8- and 16-bit classics I knew growing up. Not only that, but throw in some modern mechanics and tech, and the key element of fan input, and we have ourselves an amazing new game!

The Mighty No. 9 in this story is Beck. He is, you guessed it, the ninth in a line of extremely powerful robots. He also happens to be the only one who escaped infection from a unknown computer virus that caused all other mechs all over the world to go maniacal. Steal weapons and abilities from your enemies to make your way to defeating the final terror.

Previously, there were six stages for Beck to run and transform through, but thanks to all the people who donated, there are now two extra stages, with even more to come if they can reach their other stretch goals. These stages can also be played in any order.

What makes Mighty No. 9 so special is the ability to transform. Not only do you earn new weapons when you defeat the other Mighty Numbers, but Beck can re-configure himself into a plethora of new and different shapes that allow for new abilities. Here is an example from the KS page:

“For example, his limbs might become giant magnets, enabling him to walk up walls or rip away enemy shields…or maybe extendable spring-loaded hands would allow him to activate far-away switches or work as a grappling hook…”

In addition, Beck will also be able to gain energy called “xel” (pronounced ‘cell’) from smaller enemies by using a certain weapon or hitting them in their “sweet spot.” There are three types of xel that Beck can absorb, store, and unleash using his “Mighty Skills.” This gives you extra skills, like speed-boost or double-jump.

Here is a glimpse at some of the concepts for the Mighty No. bosses that Beck will face:

Thanks to over 46,000 backers so far, Mighty No. 9 has become the most successful Japanese crowd funding project to date! Also thanks to all the backers, many of the stretch goals have been met! There are now extra stages, an extra end stage and boss, Mac/Linux versions, PS3, 360, and WII U versions, different modes of the game, and more! This is an extremely amazing project that is being accomplished here, and everyone who is a part of it should be very happy and proud they played a role.

There is still time to donate! Most of the backer rewards include some form of the game itself. Some of the other rewards include: a digital or printed, retro-style game manual, an exclusive in-game golden hero, digital art-book, an exclusive in-game transformation, BETA ACCESS, a t-shirt, a plushie, and much more!

There are still a few days to go for Mighty No. 9, so head over to the Kickstarter page and give it a big final push. If it gets a big enough push in the final days, we should see a co-op mode, and maybe even PS4 and XBOX ONE versions! Even if you can’t donate much, this is still a project worth backing. Watch the video (which I have to say is quite touching) and see for yourself!
