Today starts the fighting game community’s biggest tournament: EVO 2013. The games featured here include: Tekken Tag Tournament II, Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs. Capcom III, Persona 4, Injustice, King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter X Tekken, and, winning the charity auction, Super Smash Bros. Melee.
(There was a slight hiccup before EVO started when Nintendo threated to sue EVO if they streamed Melee, but Nintendo reconsidered, knowing that the entire gaming community would turn on them.)
Japan dominated most of Persona 4. Yume (Aigis) won grand finals, beating Lord Knight (Mitsuru Kirijo), who fought all the way through the loser’s bracket. Yume put pressure on Lord Knight, making him unable to defend, and won 3 – 0.
During Tekken Tag, Bronson’s Ogre/Jinpachi combo was no match for Knee’s Devil Jin and Bruce, making Knee the winner of the grand finals bracket for Tekken Tag Tournament.
Mortal Kombat also finished their finals today, with Crazy DJT 88 vs. REO. The match was tight, with each player at 2 -2, but Crazy DJT’s Cyrax was able to keep up the pressure and won the final match.
Super Street Fighter IV and Super Smash Bros. Melee started their pools. Melee saw a return of old veterans and crowd favorites. HungryBox, Mango, Mewtwo King, SilentSpectre, and Silent Wolf all made it out of their pools to quarter-finals. Semi-finals will continue Saturday, with grand finals on Sunday. Super Street Fighter IV finalized their finals brackets, with Tokido sending long-time veteran Daigo to the losers bracket. Grand finals will be on Sunday.
This wraps it up for day one! Stay tuned for day two of EVO 2013. Day Two will start MvC III pools, King of Fighters XIII semi-finals, Injustice semi-finals, Melee semi finals, and Street Fighter x Tekken finals.
