PAX East kicked off this morning at 10 a.m (EST) in Boston! I’m certain some of you are raising an eyebrow and wondering “PAX East? What’s that?!” Well, PAX East is an event that Penny Arcade started in 2004 with 4,500 attendees in Bellevue, Washington, focusing on the culture and community of gaming. Not comics, not movies, not cosplay or anything else you can think of. It is pure, unadulterated gaming obsession at its best!
Our very own Sarah the Rebel is at PAX this year, and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that we’re all very excited to hear about her experience and what she really enjoyed during the event!
So, let’s talk about what exciting things happened at PAX today!
Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced their new free-to-play collectible card game HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft! This new game is focused around 1v1 and also allows for matchmaking through battle.net. This online capability will allow players to duel with other players, and will also allow for medal ranking boosts!
There will be 300 cards based on the character classes from their game World of Warcraft (WoW) available at launch. You can purchase cards in packs for about $1 each.
The beta will be available this summer for PC, MAC, and even iPad gamers. The actual game will be available at the end of 2013.
Capcom has announced that they are resurrecting DuckTales and will be remaking the original game from Nintendo into a game available for PSN, Wii/WiiU, and Xbox Live that will be called DuckTales: Remastered.
Ms. Splosion Man, a long-awaited iOS game created by Twisted Pixel, will be released by the end of this month (March 2013, for all of you going, “what month is it right now?!”).
Joystiq says this version will have power-up capabilities, one of which will let you skip levels if they are too difficult for you…like all you n00bs out there. Yeah, you. With the high squeaky voice, thinking you’re all cool, talking smack to me while I kick your butt at Halo.
*Ahem* …so, instead of running home to your mommy because a game is kicking your butt, now you can just skip the level and move on.
The game is a mere $10, and will also be available on Steam and Windows Phone.
Hey, all you Assassin’s Creed people! Don’t worry, you didn’t miss the opportunity to play a demo of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag this year. No one go a chance to play.
However, there was some video footage with commentary from Creative Director Jean Guesdon and the team at UbiSoft Montreal about what motivated them to take the game to the sea.
Jean Guesdon stated that the idea behind making the protagonist in Assassin’s Creed IV a pirate was the fact that it was an incredibly interesting time in history with compelling characters. One of the characters you can look forward to seeing in the new game is none other than Blackbeard the pirate! Arrrrrr!
There was nothing mentioned about whether or not ACIV would in any way loop back to ACII or III, but it was made known that the motivation behind making the main character a pirate was more about gameplay than anything else.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be hitting the shelves on October 29, 2013 and is currently available for pre-order for $59.99.
Marvel Heroes will be released on June 4th! Marvel Heroes is a free-to-play MMO set in the Marvel universe. Marvel Heroes combines the core gameplay style of action RPGs and MMOs with the expansive library of heroes from the Marvel Universe. In the game, players can collect and play as their favorite Marvel superheroes, and you can even go further and customize your character!
I don’t know about you, but I really like when I can customize a character. I’m pretty cheeky and girly like that. Or maybe I’m just a control freak…hmm…who knows?
Point being, IT’S FREE-TO-PLAY! And it will have PvP at launch!
Are you currently at PAX East and looking for something exciting and new? Newegg, at booth #717, is showcasing a variety of products for gaming enthusiasts, including the Antec GX700 computer case, CyberLink’s PowerDirector 11 video editing software, Kaspersky ONE Universal Security software, and the Seagate Laptop Solid State Hybrid Drive.
Additional activities at PAX East include PC gaming stations featuring StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm and Street Fighter X Tekken, “Pro vs. (average) Joe” challenge matches against pro-gamer Ryan Ramirez, a PC build contest, and plenty of giveaways such as t-shirts, Rubik’s cubes, water bottles, flashlights, and more.
Obviously, there is soooo much happening at PAX East this year that we’re all super excited for! But I just wanted to share a few things I found that really grabbed my attention. If you’d like to check out more about what’s happening and what’s coming up, this is a very detailed schedule so you can take the time to find that one thing that grabs your attention – and I would LOVE to hear about it!
