The Top Ladies of Voice Acting

What do these video game vixens…

…have in common common with these anime/cartoon characters?

Give up? Well, for starters, they are all voiced by the legendary voice actress, Tara Strong.

Ms. Strong has lent her voice to over hundreds of animated characters (both male and female, including Timmy Turner from The Fairly Odd Parents, Ben from Ben 10, and Dil Pickles from Rugrats: All Grown Up!) in her years as a voice actress, and is famous for voicing some of our personal favorites, as listed above! In honor of March being Women’s History Month, I wanted to take a moment to pay homage to the top ten (legendary) voice actresses who have voiced our favorite video game vixens and beloved anime characters, some of which may be a total surprise to you! Let’s kick it off with a name known all over the world of anime and video games:

Kari Wahlgren

Ms. Wahlgren has been at the top of the veteran voice actress food chain for a very long time, and even if you don’t know her by name, you most certainly will recognize the following characters she has lent her voice to (especially if you watch a lot of anime on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim) :

Haruko Haruhara (which was Wahlgren’s debut role) from Fooly Cooly (aka FLCL)

Celty Sturlson from Durarara!!!

Fuu Kasumi from Samurai Champloo

Robin Sena from Witch Hunter Robin

And, as far as video games, you’ve heard her as:

Kasumi from Dead Or Alive

Lady Mary from the Devil May Cry series

Setsuka from the Soul Calibur series

And even a cameo as Vicki Vale from Batman: Arkham City

Colleen Clinkenbeard

Known for her seductive yet firm, commanding voice, she has given life to multiple anime roles, including:

Yuko Ichihara from xxxholic

Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist

Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece

Rachel Moore from Case Closed

Hellena Taylor

If you aren’t sure of who she is (for shame!), then clearly you’ve never played the game in which she gives her voice to one of the ultimate video game vixens ever created.

Bayonetta from Bayonetta

And, speaking of amazing ladies who are known for voicing a character everyone loves…

Ellen McLain

She voices a character you’ve heard multiple times if you’ve ever played Portal. I’ll give you a moment to think about it.

….TIME’S UP! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the lovely woman responsible for none other than:

GLaDOS from the Portal Series

And, speaking of ladies and machines, it is with great honor I introduce one of the top (if not the top) veteran ladies in the voice acting world:

Tiffany Grant

And if you caught the “ladies and machines” reference earlier, and enjoy giant robots and the mental torture of fourteen-year-olds, then you know this lady voices one of the original female badasses of anime:

Asuka Langely Sohryu (last name is later changed to Shikinami in the Rebuild Of Evangelion series) from Neon Genesis Evangelion

To say that Asuka is in fact one of the most famous anime ladies known is an understatement. Moreover, Tiffany Grant is such a smashing voice actress, that she has often been called upon as a special guest in other anime to voice the following characters:

Bonta-kun from FullMetal Panic: Fumoffu

Marta from Fullmetal Alchemist

Nojiko from One Piece

Continuing on with our list of “Ladies and Machines”–

Jennifer Hale

Who is known most famously for voicing one of the biggest plot twists in all of video games:

Samus Aran from Metroid Prime

Dr. Naomi Hunter from Metal Gear Solid

And later, Emma Emmerich from Metal Gear Solid 2

And, of course, Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series.

Let’s add one more lady to this list, shall we?

Luci Christian

Christian has twice as many titles under her belt as Kira Vincent-Davis (mentioned below), but is also the voice of another very famous anime character who falls into the “machines and ladies” category, along with Asuka and her voice actress Tiffany Grant (who Christian has worked with before)–

Kaname Chidori from The FullMetal Panic! series

AND, she voices the younger sister of Nojiko (also voiced by Tiffany Grant, as mentioned above)–

Nami from One Piece

Interestingly enough, Christian’s specialty seems to be children (and more often than not, mentally unstable and homicidal children), including:

Mariko from Elfen Lied (where Kira Vincent-Davis played the lead homicidal killer, Lucy/Nyu (see below))

Wrath from FullMetal Alchemist (2003)

And the not-homicidal, but absolutely adorable:

Mitsukuni Haninozuka (Honey-sempai) from Ouran High School Host Club

Spoiler alert: he’s actually seventeen years old.

Kira Vincent-Davis

While we’re on the topic of women who are perfect at playing adorable characters who have Nice Girl/Will-Kill-You-If-You-Look-At-Her-Funny personalities, allow me to direct your attention to one of my favorite voice actresses:

Davis has well over one hundred roles under her belt, with her most famously-known characters being:

The bloodthirsty and innocent Lucy/Nyu from Elfen Lied

Former gang-leader-turned-nice-girl Miyu Yamazaki from SuperGals!

And perpetual ditz Ayumu “Osaka” Kasuga from Azumagadaioh!

And what’s interesting is that Davis almost always, always, always ended up working with Luci Christian when it came to projects as well, making them ADV’s most “dynamic duo” for how well they played off one another.

Bringing this list to a close, last, but certainly not least (gotta save the best For last!) is a voice actress who has been featured in multiple video games, as well as anime:

Laura Bailey

Ms. Bailey is a staple in the video game/anime world, and is known for voicing these popular characters (and a plethora of others).

Blaze the Cat from Sonic the Hedgehog

Catherine from Catherine

Serah Farron from Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2

Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket

Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist

  1. Very good article, though for some reason an image or two failed to load for me (no clue why, hopefully a temporary bug!).

Voice acting is an interesting field, so it’s great to see so many talented women who excel at it!
