SoCal Regionals 2013

This past weekend I attended the SoCal Regionals! Watching it on the stream is not the same as actually being in the room with the fighters. The energy was intense, and it was clear that there was a lot of respect and rivalry going around.

Actually being in the room for the Combofiend v. Marlin Pie match was electrifying. The commentators are really reacting to the crowds energy when they report on the stream.

Other notable players in attendance included WW|Infiltration, EG|Justin Wong, AGE|NYChrisG, coL|Filipino Champ, RZR|Latif, EG|PR Balrog, EG|Ricky Ortiz, BT|Dieminion, AGE|Snake Eyez, CCG|Chi-Rithy, Mike Ross, BT|Clockw0rk, LU|Alex Valle, and many more.

It turned out there were some casual play areas, so I gave Tekken Tag Tournament 2 a whirl. I lost miserably the first few times until I started to remember my combos. I did better after that, but was still nowhere near my old skill level. I played for about an hour before a gentleman came over to practice for the tournament. I didn’t mind him beating me, but his girlfriend standing behind us coaching him made me uncomfortable, so I drifted around checking out the other games.

I was really surprised by the amount of games in competitions that day. I saw King of Fighters, Persona 4, Skullgirls, Mortal Kombat, TTT2, all types of Street Fighter, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and UMvC3. Along with the game stations were plenty of vendors selling fight pads and other gaming accessories.

Another highlight of my day was the dress fight between Hellpockets and Giby in Garou Mark of the Wolves. Giby won 10-0, so Hellpockets was transformed into a lovely version of himself.

I also sold a shirt to ChrisG…fangirl moment!

All-in-all, I had a great time, and I am definitely going to try to attend more fighting game competitions. And brush up on my skills (hey…I did win a match in PSABR).

  1. I watched most of the SCR stream on the archives over the past couple days and it looked like a pretty damn good event. Solid venue, great matches and big turnout. It seemed like the room was pretty much packed for most of Saturday and Sunday, but you were there in person — how busy was it?
