On Omega DLC and Mass Effect 4: No Shepard 2.0

BioWare has confirmed that the new hero for Mass Effect 4 will not be “Shepard 2”. The company is in the beginning planning phases, but they confirm that they are not falling into the trap of just creating a new version of Shepard.

I’m VERY curious how they will avoid this, since any human soldier is going to be compared to Shepard. They mention that you will not be a “soldier saving the galaxy,” but I’m not really sure the games will still be compelling otherwise. Escapist apparently shares my concern, but thinks it might be a good thing for the series. I do worry, especially with the increasingly combat-focused tone of the previous three games, that a new game will be VERY unpopular if we aren’t running around shooting things in the face.

One possible solution is to feature an alien as the protagonist. People responded well to the Asari and (as much as it hurts me that this will probably be a determining factor) they are the most human-like of the aliens.

BioWare also has a wealth of other conflicts to choose from, from the Rachni Wars to the Krogan Rebellion to the First Contact War. The Mass Effect universe may have 99 problems, but lacking war ain’t one.

Oh, speaking of playing as an Asari, guess who you will join in the upcoming Omega expansion? That’s right, BioWare has more than fulfilled your need for Aria: it is letting you play with Aria. Added bonus: you will be accompanied by a female Turian NPC…wait for it…SQUUUUUEEEEEEE!

Combine that with the fact that BioWare has stated that the DLC is the biggest expansion in the series to date, and you have a very happy Rebel. It’s almost like BioWare read my mind, and then decided to reward me for my undying loyalty. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME. Omega lands November 27th.

Ah the joys of sexism extend beyond our galaxy. I AM MORE THAN MY LOOKS WORTHLESS HUMAN.

Anyhoo, it gives me a lot to think of as I wait to dive into Operation Bloodlust over the weekend.

What do you think the new hero or setting will be like?

I hope it’s like this.

  2. Well considering all the the potentially playable alien races in the ME series can speak perfectly fine, your voiced protagonist example just doesn’t make any kind of sense. I think it would be a win win if they recorded more main character dialogue options based on race. ME did it well but we have been stuck with the 2 version dialogue (male/female) and if they did jump towards playable alien races that established standard could be expanded. 3 dialogue trees, 4 even. Give me my Asari, Krogan, Turian as playable main protagonists. That would be a great value-add to the game right out of the gate.

    • My argument made no sense to you because you obviously didnt play Dragon Age or Dragon Age 2. My apologies for skipping over important information: BioWare did not (and stated that they will not) let people pick their race in Dragon Age 2 or 3, because it is too much work to do all of those different voices for the main characters. If you pay attention in the ME series, you will hear that each alien race has a distinctive voice. Therefore, BioWare would have to record multiple voices doing the same dialogue (just like they would have had to in DA2) and they are not going to do that. If they wouldnt do it with elves, humans and dwarves, which had such slight vocal differences, and if they already complain about having to record so much dialogue for just male and female options, they certainly arent going to do it for male human, female human, male turian, female turian, male krogan, female krogan, etc. The fact that despite fans BEGGING them to allow them to play as elves or dwarves in the upcoming DA3, BioWare announced that that will not be an option because the character is going to be voiced is even further proof that BioWare will not allow you to choose your race for a role with so many dialogue options. They just dont want to record/pay for that much dialogue.

  4. I have 2 major hopes for ME4. I’d really like to be able to choose my species and I’d like the game to at least start with smaller stakes. I have this fear that they’re going to try rope us into another reaper war sort of situation. I think another apocalyptic storyline would be a mistake.

    • Thanks for commenting! I really think your hopes are going to be let down as far as choosing a species. BioWare has a bad track record for that. In Dragon Age II, they wanted a voiced protagonist, and so you could only play as a human. They are doing that again for Dragon Age III, despite fans begging them not to. I believe they will feel the same way about aliens in the ME universe. If you notice, each alien has a distinct type of voice. If we could choose our character, they would have to do much more voice work. I don’t think they will :-/
