Top Five New Female Characters in Upcoming Games

Female Heroes

Inspired by her recent trip to PAX Prime, Sarah and I were talking about all the girl power going on in game previews this year. So we decided to make a list of the top five upcoming female characters we are most excited about.

5. Sofia Hendrik in Gears of War: Judgement (Xbox 360)

Sofia Hendrik

Sofia was formerly a journalist, but she joined the COG army after Emergence Day. While in training to be a member of the Onyx Guard, the Locust attacked Halvo Bay and she had to join Kilo Squad, where she meets up with Gears series regulars Augustus Cole and Damon Baird.

Why we’re excited:

Gears has always been a very bro-tastic series, so it’s nice to see another lady there. It was a pleasant surprise when Sam Byrne appeared as a playable character in Gears of War 3, and it’s nice to know that she was accepted enough for Epic to be comfortable with including more women.

4. Pilgrim in Firefall (PC)

Pilgrim in Firefall

We haven’t actually been able to confirm that Pilgrim is one of the playable female characters in Firefall, but we definitely hope she appears, because she is bad-ass. If we’re not able to play as her, the other women look pretty awesome too.

Sarah’s note: the model who played the woman from the trailer on the show floor showed that she really does have a viable female body.

Why we’re excited:

A teenage telepath with an attitude and a mohawk who’s capable of delivering serious beatdowns? Why wouldn’t we be excited?

3. Maya in Borderlands 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)

Maya in Borderlands 2

The re-imagining of Borderland’s siren class, Maya has quite an interesting backstory. Despite being worshiped as a goddess on her home planet, Maya has come to Pandora in search of answers about her past. She’s no royal softy though, not when she’s combining her phaselocking ability with any of the countless new guns you’ll find in Borderlands 2.

Why we’re excited:

Lilith, the original Borderlands siren, is particularly beloved around these parts, so there’s an immediate attraction to Maya. Add in the mystery of her backstory and just how the two sirens are connected, and our interest is more than piqued.

2. Aveline in Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation (PlayStation Vita)

Aveline in Assassin's Creed III Liberation

Aveline represents a lot of changes for the Assassin’s Creed series. The first female assassin, the first non-white protagonist, and (along with Connor in Assassin’s Creed III, which releases the same day) the first American character. After Aveline is recruited into the Brotherhood by a former slave, Agate, we’ll follow along as she executes her foes across New Orleans and parts of Mexico.

Why we’re excited:

Because great African-American characters are, sadly, as rare as awesome female characters are, it’s fantastic to get to play as a combination of both. Getting to play as a stealthy assassin with a Batman-worthy assortment of tools is just icing on the cake.

1. Jodie Holmes in Beyond: Two Souls (PS3)

Jodie Holmes in Beyond: Two Souls

Not much is known about Jodie, but we should get to know her pretty well since the game is said to take us through fifteen years of her life. What we do know is that Jodie has supernatural power due to a mysterious connection to a spirit named Aiden.

Why we’re excited:

Because this is basically a supernatural mystery/thriller starring Ellen Paige. Jodie is not only an intriguing character, but one who really seems lifelike because of the decision to use a professional actress with motion capture technology. Quantic Dream is promising an emotional story with decisions that really matter, and we can’t wait to go along for the ride.

Old Friends for Sale

Not to mention all the other female characters that aren’t new that we saw in previews. We’re looking forward to the return of Jun Kazama in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (PS3, Xbox 360), Nariko and Fat Princess in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (PS3 & Vita), Cortana in Halo 4 (Xbox 360), Amaterasu in Okami HD (PS3), Claris Sinclair in NiGHTS into DREAMS…HD (PS3, Xbox 360, PC), etc., etc., etc.

All in all, it’s going to be a girltastic gaming season!
