Ladies and Gentlemen, I am here to inform you that you can now travel through space from the comfort of your couch, bed or, quite frankly, wherever you feel like. As long as you have access to a computer.
SpaceEngine is a new (and free!) program that lets you three-dimensionally explore the universe, using actual astronomical data to create the regions you are viewing. Anything they didn’t have hard data on (stuff not charted yet by human astronomy) will be simulated as you pass through the uncharted areas. So basically, starting at the planet Earth, you can lift off into space and explore the galaxies. And everything you would find in actual space is there. All the asteroids, moons, star clusters, etc.
And it has tons of cool features. You can use your WASD keys to move around like in a lot of first person shooters, and orbital motions of planets are all calculated in real time. The lighting effects allows lens flares, solar eclipses, and shadows of planetary rings. Planets and other bodies also cast light and shadows on one another.
They have also recently added controllable spaceships. Which, holy crap, you can fly your own space ship through the universe. YES PLEASE.
