This fall, the Force will be with of us all, even those of who can’t regularly afford connection to a mystical life-force that bonds all life in the universe together. Jeff Hickman (the executive producer of the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic) announced that coming this fall, SWTOR is going to get a new free-to-play option.
That’s right, folks. All the fun you can shake a lightsaber at without hurting yourself…absolutely free. … Assuming you’ve bought the game.
In a bid to increase the number of players, you will soon be able to play SWOTOR with no monthly subscription fee all the way up to level fifty. There will be certain restrictions in place to keep you from enjoying the full-on SWOTOR experience, but Hickman and co. are clearly hoping that a taste of the experience will convince you to become a subscriber.
Also announced were a slew of bonus Cartel Coins, which you can use in to buy unique items for your character. Says Hickman, “Current and lapsed subscribers will earn 200 Cartel Coins for every paid month prior to today (July 31, 2012) and until the Free-to-Play option launches.”
If you’ve bought the special edition of the game, you’re in for an extra 1000 bonus Cartel Coins.
Hickman also announced new content on the way, including new missions, warzones, and a shady new companion to accompany you on your shady trips around the galaxy.
