Let’s talk accessories, people.
There is not a lot I love more in this world than shiny, nifty-looking trinkets that I can decorate myself with. Even more so when they are unique pieces that are relevant to specific interests.
Or just loud and crazy-looking.
I used to be employed by a rather pricey chain retail store *coughWhiteHouseBlackMarketcough* that sells expensive, bedazzled clothes and accessories I couldn’t afford even with my paycheck and discount. Once, while I was purchasing a basic black tee, one of my superiors (who was kind of a bitch) asked why I always bought very basic tees and shirts.
It was kind of a rude question to begin with, and mostly sounded to me like, “WHY DO YOU DRESS LIKE CRAP?” First off, as I explained to her, I can’t afford their super-pretty-special tops. And secondly, my personal fashion belief is that it’s better to own and wear the basics, clothing-wise, and let your accessories do the talking.
So it should come as no surprise that I own so many earrings that not even this beast can hold them all.
I collect weird, interesting earrings like some people collect action figures, coins, or stamps.
Earrings may be my favorite, but I am also exceedingly fond of interesting watches, rings, and necklaces.
All that being said, I am going to attempt to rank my (so far) favorite drool-worthy nerd girl accessories.
10. These awesome Portal earrings from J!NX
Everyone loves Portal. And look! It’s like your ears are portals! And there’s a lady going through them!
9. The iNecklace from ThinkGeek
It glows and you can open up its tiny insides and mess with how it pulses. It looks pretty and simple, and will be your own personal power button.
8. The Tatty Devine name necklace
Tatty Devine is a UK-based company that makes almost exclusively perspex jewelry. Now, while this isn’t specifically “geeky” and it doesn’t really scream “NERD” to people who see you wearing it, I justify its inclusion by saying, “You can make it whatever you want!”
You can make it say NERD! if you really want to, and then it actually will scream at people that you are one.
I desperately want one with my Twitter handle, and a little birdy hanging down from the name. You should go design one yourself.
7. Another necklace from Tatty Devine: The Dinosaur
Inspired by the T. Rex at the London Natural History Museum, you can get this guy in gold or black, and in even bigger sizes. I like this smaller, gold one.
Also, be sure to peruse the rest of the Tatty Devine site, they have loads of other pieces that I could list for ages but won’t because you would stop reading.
You may already have.
6. The awesome caffeine molecule necklace from ThinkGeek
I started drinking coffee in my freshman year of high school, and coffee and I have been inseparable since then. It’s part of a daily ritual, and you’d better believe that if I had $85 to spare right now I would be wearing this shiz around my neck every day.
Do you know how many groceries that could buy?
WHAT IF MY SHITTY CAR BREAKS DOWN AND I NEED THAT MONEY?
Moving on to something a little cheaper…
I just love the irony. Plus, I have pretty much been playing Minecraft nonstop since it came out on the Xbox 360, and I want to declare my love for that stupid game everywhere.
4.) This badass anguistralobe pendant from ThinkGeek
I know everyone is going “What in the holy hell is an anguistralobe?” Well children, gather round.
Back in the olde-timey times, they used anguistralobes to predict the comings and goings of the planets and stars and such. Now, this one is nonfunctional, but it looks super awesome.
And also totally steampunk, am I right?
I’m totally right.
3.) Something nifty you bought for super cheap from a flea market or a garage sale or an antique sale. Or something like that.
Everyone needs something that used to belong to someone else and has a little bit of a story.
Like a weird old ring you found at an antique store in the middle of nowhere, or like mine, an old silver watch you bought at a widower’s estate sale for $1.25. Go forth and find something strange!
2.) The Princess Leia hoodie from Her Universe
Her Universe is awesome because it was created by Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, specifically for nerd girls. She teamed up with Lucasfilm and SyFy to bring the world really cool clothes and jewelry.
The collections are kind of limited. She has Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, and Warehouse 13 apparel.
There is also my favorite, a SyFy Originals collection, and the only thing in that collection is a Sharktopus t-shirt that I MUST OWN.
1.) A Harry Potter house scarf from ThinkGeek
Yes, my friends, I believe everyone should represent their house during those cold winter months, whether you be Gryffindor or Slytherin (Ravenclaw fo’ life).
I have literally never met anyone who dislikes Harry Potter and, if you do, I don’t want to be friends with you.
ThinkGeek only has Slytherin, Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw in stock right now, because apparently all the Hufflepuffs in the world have been buying scarves. However, there are plenty of other sites selling them, including costume shops and probably everyone who sells anything knitted on Etsy.
Or, “Things I Like, but Not Enough to Include Them in the Top Ten”.
Also, this Victorian rotating triple locket.
Think of all the pictures of your cats you could put in there. Or, you know, your significant other. Or yourself!
Note: This was mostly included because STEAMPUNK.
And finally, I leaving you with the site Honestly…WTF. I discovered them this summer and they have a HUGE Do It Yourself section with tutorials on just about everything; from studded Converse to necklaces to some nifty sunglasses. And I can’t get away from their DIY bracelets. I’ve made, like, ten of those chevron pattern friendship bracelets already.
All for myself, of course. Because, if you are a smart person, you will stay away from my friendship.
