Resident Evil 6 Launch Party

I had the opportunity last night to attend the Resident Evil 6 Launch Party at Lure in Hollywood. The party was headlined by none other than Nas, and featured plenty of gaming stations.

I had an amazing time watching Nas perform what was essentially a greatest hits concert from a mere two feet away. Kudos to Capcom and IGN for bringin the awesome!

The party also featured zombie go-go dancers (lolwut), airbrush face-painting (so you too could be a zombie dancer), great music from the likes of Miles Mosley, and a chance to interact with some of the members of the Capcom community.

Speaking of which, I met Eiichiro Sasaki, director of RE6, and we had a lovely conversation about Aerosmith and Guns ‘N’ Roses. We probably would have talked more about the game, but he didn’t speak much English and we didn’t speak much Japanese, so we had to let music do the talking for us. It was still awesome that he was there and interested in chatting with the fans.

Playing the RE6 Demo

I ended up running into the ever-charming Gustavo who let me be his player two for the demo. Unfortunately, as I later learned, one of the MANY menu options we clicked a hurried A button to was the choice to play with the classic control settings.

Oh boy.

I mean, we did fine, we ended up mostly kung fu-ing zombies to death, but I found the controls really difficult. The last RE game I played was over ten years ago and on a PC, so I had no frame of reference for how the game was supposed to feel. I was hardly ever able to get the crosshairs on the zombies!

I asked Loser Geek to play the demo at home for me and let me know how he felt about it, since he actually played a few RE games. Here’s what he had to say:

“The changes to the controls are certainly an improvement, but aiming was more difficult for me than in games like Gears of War, so having to get multiple headshots before an enemy went down was frustrating. Especially when they throw a bunch at you at once. I know it’s supposed to induce panic and whatnot, but it feels more cheap than anything.”

I also want to point out that you are hardly ever given ammo. So missing a headshot or getting a ton of zombies thrown at you really does mean getting creative with your kung fu.

On the graphics side, however, both of us were impressed. This, Borderlands 2, and what I’ve seen of Halo 4 make me sad that new consoles will be coming soon, because clearly the current gen is still very capable.

All-in-all, I had a great time. Kudos to the team that pulled off this fun event!
