Wiiuwiiuwiiiweeuuuweeuuuu: An Opinionated Reporting of the Wii U News

Wii U

Nintendo had a conference this morning all about their brand new, ready to be welcomed into the world Wii U. The console will be available for purchase on November 18th, and you can buy either the basic package for $300, or the “deluxe” package for $350. Pretty much the difference is some storage, and whether you want it in black or white. Wii U is also going to come with their incredibly and so creatively named TVii (pronounced teevee-eeeeeeeeee, I’m assuming), which is just Hulu and Netflix for Wii.

They’ve also announced a bunch of titles, including the Nintendo Land collection, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Mass Effect 3, and the Wii U exclusive, Bayonetta 2. Which was kind of a surprising move on Platinum Games’s part.

This is all well and good, except that as Forbes pointed out: “There’s no simple concept here like there was with the advent of motion controls. As such, it’s going to be a much harder sell to the sorts of “casuals” who now find the Wii collecting dust on their shelves.”

The gamepad is a totally different animal. While it’s cool that one person can be playing one game on the gamepad’s small touch screen while someone else uses the tv, what’s the point of its multiplayer functions? Everyone else has to use the old Wii sensors while one player uses the gamepad.

And what’s going to happen in a year when Microsoft and Sony both announce new consoles? Wii U will be collecting dust on our entertainment centers while prices drop in the stores.

It all just kind of seems like a pointless waste of money to me. It’s a throwaway purchase. If you have $350 to spend that means nothing to you otherwise, go for it. But for such a narrow range of games and a new gamepad that adds almost nothing to gameplay, it’s not worth it.

And I feel sorry for anyone who was really looking forward to Bayonetta 2 and her gun shoes. Looks like you’re going to be dropping at least $300 for this, not including the cost of the game itself.

Thanks Nintendo, but no thanks.

    • No! Someone else asked me that too. I had completely forgotten about that song until it was brought up. Although once it was brought up I couldn’t get it out of my head. Weeeuweeeuweeee
