The NBF Crew’s Least-Favorite Female Characters

Princess Peach

Every site has a post about their favorite female characters, the best female characters, etc. So we decided to go a different route. Who can we not stand?

Okay, so we aren’t that smart. I was just bitchin’ about having to not only rescue Princess Peach from her CHILDREN, but then having to carry her home.

Just ’cause Bowser don’t make you walk don’t mean you get that kinda treatment here, Princess!

Anywho…this got me wondering who the rest of the Nerdy But Flirty crew would say was the most irritating, so I asked them. You’re welcome.

axlcalrissian:

Fuh…Ivy from Soul Calibur, because she’s gone from a character who, while EXTREMELY sexualized, had a legitimate story, to someone who has been completely overshadowed by the fact that her boobs get bigger with every game, and have now reached a point of inhuman gigantism.

She’s not really interesting, and she’s a perfect example of a boring, sex-driven character.

Kelsey:

Okay, can I choose Ashley and Miranda from Mass Effect? Both of them are kick-ass ladies, but they still irritate the shit out of me.

Ashley is constantly making jokes and comments about alien species (at one point, she calls the Geth “flashlight heads”) and she’s kind of just a shallow, boring character in general. Plus, what’s with her weird ME3 makeover?

And Miranda was created to be genetically perfect, which she bitches about all the goddamn time, when she’s not talking about her daddy issues. And all of her conversations consist of at least one lingering ass shot. As a character, I still like her better than Ashley though.

Crystal:

I’m a terrible person. Why am I a terrible person? Because my least favorite female character is a CHILD. A child! How cruel is that? Whatever. I feel bad for half a second but overall, I don’t care. My least-favorite female video game character is Sherry Birkin.

Sherry Birkin

Sherry Birkin was introduced in Resident Evil 2. The daughter of Annette and William Birkin, two scientists that worked for the Umbrella Corporation, we run into Sherry while playing as Claire. Her voice acting was high-pitched and obnoxious, and to add to it, the little turd is always running off on her own, even when pleaded with not to! I adored Resident Evil 2, but half of the time I wanted Sherry to go ahead and vanish. Besides, wouldn’t Claire find her brother faster without that little girl anyway?! Maybe I should be more sympathetic; her father became a monster and implanted her with a G-virus embryo (ew, gross) and, you know, she’s a kid. But I wouldn’t have shed a tear if she happened to disappear.

I did not play Darkside Chronicles, so I’m not positive if she was still obnoxious in that game like she was in RE2. If she is, I guess I’m thankful I never got around to playing it. I’m mean!

Anyhow, she’s not a child anymore. We’ll see an adult Sherry Birkin in Resident Evil 6. Guess I’ll find out if she’s less obnoxious as a grown-up!

Die GameFrau:

No contest: Rinoa Heartilly from Final Fantasy VIII. When we first meet Rinoa, she effectively toots-and-boots Squall on the dance floor at Balamb Garden; we later discover that she’s a rebel, political activist, and all-around badass. When she joins the party, her stats are unbelievable!

One act later, she’s reduced to victim and love interest and ends up LITERALLY floating through space into Squall’s arms.  Unforgivable.

Sabirah:

Since my all-time least favorite character has been stolen from me, (she’s in another castle, ahem ahem) I will go with number two:

Amy Rose from all those Sonic games.

Like many sassy sidekicks, Amy Rose brings comic relief, fluff and puff, and a bit of sprightly color in a sea of testosterone.

While I won’t argue that this feisty little gal has some positive qualities, I will say that she is, like many little girls her age, ANNOYING. Characters like Amy Rose prove what a shortage there is in the gaming industry of interesting, complex, INDEPENDENT, and fierce female characters. Hardly developing as a character throughout the years, (except for that ‘newer-and-even-more-high-pitched-than-ever’ voice…what’s up with that?) Amy has proved time and again that she is a one-trick pony: forever in love with, and pining for, good ol’ Sonic.

Amy Rose

I did have to unlock her, showing that she’s playing hard to get for someone at least, but I was unimpressed and left wanting more. Although she does prove the old adage that if at first you don’t succeed, try again, and again, and again, and again, and again…it would have been nice to see Amy Rose fixated on something other than the love of a man—ehrm, hedgehog. Man-hedgehog. All in all, Amy Rose could have been more, well, badass. For a twelve year old.

Loser Geek:

Hey! Listen! It’s gotta be Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Do I even need to explain this one? Okay, fine. Navi’s voice is annoying enough, but the repetition is what really makes her rage-inducing. The epitome of irritating side-kicks.

Well, there you have it. We all hate high voices, crying, and ridiculous boobs.

Who are your least favorite video game characters?

  1. The thing that annoyed me the most about Ashley from the Mass Effect series was that her view on aliens never changed. In the first game it’s understandable, humans are relatively new to the galaxy and our first impression was soured by a war which killed some of her family. All she had been exposed to was serving in the alliance and then protecting a glorified farming colony so her exposure outside of that was limited. But then as the Reapers become a larger threat and as the galaxy works together to stop them, and even after straight up being part of the Normandy she never bothered to stop and think for one second that maybe the other species are totally okay. In a game where characters change over time (Garrus, Jack, Tali) it was frustrating to see one of the staples of the series just stay the same the entire time.

  2. I posted the link to this on Tumblr, and someone responded with this: “SHERRY! Do you know how happy I was, what possible amount of glee I felt, when I was forced to defenselessly play as her for a small portion of RE2 and those zombies kept puking on me? I’d linger, just so I could watch! Now who’s the bad person? xD”

    HAHAHA. YES. YESSSSSSSS!
