Sunset is a Kickstarter from Tale of Tales (The Path, The Endless Forest, The Graveyard, Vanitas, Fatale, Bientôt l’été, and Luxuria Superbia) for a game that takes place in a South American apartment in 1972, against the backdrop of a violent revolution. Here’s some more plot detail:
“You play a housekeeper called Angela Burnes. Every week, an hour before sunset, you visit the swanky bachelor pad of Gabriel Ortega. You are given a number of tasks to do, but the temptation to go through his stuff is irresistible. As you get to know your mysterious employer better, you are sucked into a rebellious plot against a notorious dictator Generalísimo Ricardo Miraflores.”
Tale of Tales is a development studio run by married couple Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn. They say that Sunset is influenced by Gone Home and Dear Esther – gameplay is exploration based, with an important difference from those games; events happen in the present instead of past events being uncovered. There are no puzzles and no combat; just the story and how you choose to interact with it. The other inspiration is military action games, but from the perspective of someone on the sidelines. Due to the time period, black power will be explored as well as revolutions overseas. The game sounds amazing, and I’ve enjoyed the influences cited along with the other Tale of Tales games. I can’t wait to experience it for myself. It’s also awesome that Angela is a “Black feminist with an afro,” all of which is a rarity among video game protagonists. Auriea is a woman of color as well, so Sunset has a lot of diversity both behind the scenes and in the game itself.
Austin Wintory (flOw, Journey, Monaco, The Banner Saga) will be composing the music, which is very exciting. Tina Marie Murray (Black August, Mango Kiss) is voicing Angela. Rewards include the game, the soundtrack, a digital art book, a digital music book, a digital diary, all the other Tale of Tales games, and much more. There was a single stretch goal (seeing Angela in the world more, expanding her story, and hiring some more designers) which has been passed. As of this writing, 1,916 backers have given $59,640 toward the asked for $25,000. The game will be released in March 2015.
